The Live Looper (Pro)
The Looper is a live loop pedal built into Homecrate. It captures whatever you’re monitoring — a guitar through an amp sim, a synth, a mic — into a loop, lets you stack overdub layers on top, keeps everything locked to your song, and can be driven hands-free from a MIDI controller. It’s designed for building a part live and practicing over it, then dropping the result into your project.
🔒 Pro feature. The Looper is available with Homecrate Pro. Free users see it locked in the More menu.
Opening the Looper
Tap ⋯ menu → Looper. A floating panel appears that you can drag anywhere on screen. The looper keeps running even if you close the panel — reopen it any time from the menu.

The Looper works on monitored tracks. Before you record, put a track in Monitor mode so the looper has something to hear. See Arming Tracks & Input Monitoring.
Choosing a Source
The INPUT row lists every track that’s currently monitoring. Tap a pill to attach the loop to that track’s live sound. Once you pick a source, the looper stops auto-switching, so it stays on the part you want.
- If no track is monitoring, the panel prompts you to enable monitoring first.
- If the source track’s monitoring stops, the loop shows (suspended) and resumes when monitoring comes back.
Recording a Loop
The transport caps at the bottom of the panel:
| Cap | What it does |
|---|---|
| REC | Start (or arm) recording the loop |
| LOOP / PLAY | Close the take into a loop / restart it |
| STOP | Stop, quantized to the loop boundary |
| DUB | Overdub arm (see below) |
The basic flow: tap REC, play your part, tap LOOP to close it — it starts cycling immediately.
Loop Length & Snap
- LENGTH row: OFF (free length), 2 / 4 / 8 bars, or a typed custom bar count. Any set length makes the loop record exactly that many bars.
- SNAP row (used when LENGTH is OFF): Free / Beat / Bar — quantizes where the recording starts so your loop lines up with the grid.
- COUNT — count in a measure before recording starts.
- Q-REC — quantize the record start.
- Threshold arming — drag the dB arm line on the monitor scope to auto-start recording the moment your signal crosses it, so you can start with your hands on the instrument.
Sync to the Song
SYNC (on by default) locks the loop to your song’s transport — it pauses, resumes, and re-anchors with Play/Stop so the loop always lines up with your arrangement. Turn it off to run the looper free of the song.
Overdubbing (Layering)
DUB is a persistent overdub arm (on by default). With it armed, closing a take automatically rolls into sound-on-sound layering — each pass you play adds another layer on top. Press DUB to punch out or toggle the arm.
- The loop LCD shows a layer count and a dot per layer.
- Undo pops the most recent layer (handy for peeling back a pass that didn’t land).
- Clear wipes the whole loop.
- A volume knob sets the loop’s playback level.
Two scopes help you see what’s happening: a live monitor scope while you play, and a frozen loop-review scope with a moving playhead showing where you are in the loop.
Hands-Free: MIDI-Assignable Actions
Every looper action can be triggered from a MIDI controller — perfect for a foot controller so you can loop without touching the screen.
- Tap MIDI LEARN to arm the whole panel for mapping.
- Tap the looper button you want to map, then send the MIDI message (a footswitch press, a pad, etc.).
- The mapping shows under the button.
Mappable actions: Record, Close Loop, Stop, Overdub, Undo, and Clear. Set up a footswitch for Record/Close/Overdub and you have a full loop pedal.
Tips
- Set a LENGTH (e.g. 4 bars) with SYNC on for tight, song-aligned loops; use OFF + Bar snap for free-form ideas that still start on the grid.
- Use threshold arming so recording starts exactly when you hit the first note — no scramble to tap REC.
- Overdub a simple chord bed first, then layer a melody and a percussive part on top.
- Map Record / Overdub / Undo to a MIDI footswitch to build parts live with both hands on the instrument.
